Lahaina, Maui

We spent 2 days & one night in Lahaina which is on the 2nd largest Hawaiian island, Maui. It is a beautiful island but surprisingly dry.

It is ranked as one of the top resort islands in the world due to pristine beaches, quality hotels and restaurants & shopping.
We reached Lahaina by tender from the ship









The Banyan tree is the symbol of Lahaina and located in the main square.

Lahaina was very relaxed and offers an enjoyable experience with shops and outlets that are frequented by both tourists and locals. It has only 125 thousand locals and boast 2.5 million tourists, but the shops are spread along the shoreline road and no overcrowding was apparent when we were there.

Tuesday October 1

Today we catch up Rotarian Wendy Acosta who we met at International Conference in Sydney when she stayed with Diane & Ian.  Wendy drove us further around the island to Kapulua, the major town some 45Km away. We travelled between the north eastern and northwestern volcanoes



The dry nature of the place was very apparent.





We enjoyed a great lunch at restaurant at a local golf course.



This doesn’t do the view justice due to the cloud buildup.










We went to Wendy’s house and enjoyed the view across the fields to the ocean.


Next a visit to an amazing art gallery, located in a restored historic house.

Estonian Open Air Museum

A short local bus ride to an outer suburb of Tallinn took us to the Estonian Open Air Museum that has traditional buildings from all over the country. All buildings have been dismantled in their home villages and reassembled to conserve their heritage. The interiors contained traditional furniture and we saw a number of handcrafts and displays. It was spread over a large area and we saw a good cross section of Estonian country lifestyle and culture over the ages.   At the Sassi-Janni Farmstead we saw a typical, early 19 th century West Estonian farmstead grouped around a pole operated well. Grain was kept in the attic and dried by smoke from the family stove. We were also treated to an hour-long display of Estonian folk dancing which is widely practised by people of all ages. Honolulu

Honolulu: Not Waikiki or Pearl Harbour this time. With limited time in Honolulu, the girls hit the outlet shops and the boys went to the Bishop Museum .  A banyan tree outside the Hawaiian Hall of the Bishop museum Bishop Museum is home to the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts in the world and houses over 25 million historical and cultural items from all over the Pacific.
