Honolulu

Honolulu: Not Waikiki or Pearl Harbour this time.

With limited time in Honolulu, the girls hit the outlet shops and the boys went to the Bishop Museum.

 The Duke:

Duke Kanahamoku introduced surfboard riding to Australia at Freshwater Beach (our local beach) on January 1915.

He was a famous Hawaiian Olympic athlete and set a number of world records and is still remembered and admired today.

How did they navigate without charts?

Using shapes and sequences of seashells laid out in a particular pattern a sailor would convey their navigation knowledge of the ocean and to others. It was passed through the generations and younger sailors would learn from older navigators in this fashion.

A fascinating story is the Western overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation.

On Jan. 17, 1893, Hawaii's monarchy was overthrown when a group of businessmen and sugar planters forced Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate. The coup led to the dissolving of the Kingdom of Hawaii two years later.
In 1898, the Spanish-American War broke out, and the strategic use of the naval base at Pearl Harbour during the war convinced Congress to approve formal annexation. Two years later, Hawaii was organised into a formal U.S. territory and in 1959 entered the United States as the 50th state.

We enjoyed our trip to Hawaii and now felt we understood the history of these proud people a little better.
