After a long wait, we went by Red Bus to the Old City that is on a small island called Gamla Stan. It is one huge area of historical heritage with relics of Stockholm’s early history dating from 13th century. There are many small streets and squares lined with souvenir, antique and speciality shops in addition to churches, museums and palaces.

Gustav II Adolf’s equestrian statue unveiled in 1796. It is located in an area known as the King’s garden. The Royal Opera house in behind.

This 700 year old Cathedral is in the middle of the old city







 This ship is a youth hostel. Built in 1888 and originally a fully rigged freighter became the youth hostel in 1949. It is moored opposite the Royal palace.

 - Riddarholmskyrkan church on an island (Riddarholmen). The church was rebuilt after a serious fire in 1835 and attainted the latticework cast-iron tower spire. Sarcophagi, worn gravestones and ornate burial vaults of the Royal family dating back to 17th century surround it.


The City Hall was built in 1923 and has an impressive 106m high bell tower with the 3 crowns, The Kronor, the heraldic symbol of Sweden that dates from the 14th century.

The Riddarhuset, the house of Nobility. This assembly point for nobility was built in 1641-47 and. is still a base for meetings and events.

On our return journey we passed by other points of interest


Tivoli Grona Lund funfair on the Djugarden Island, it also has an ABBA museum next door.


The southern island, Sodermalm, has a large square (citizens square) with an amazing deigned apartment block in the background.

 Viking Line Cruise Terminal berths ferries that run to Helsinki.
