After a long wait, we went by Red Bus to the Old City that is on a small island called Gamla Stan. It is one huge area of historical heritage with relics of Stockholm’s early history dating from 13th century. There are many small streets and squares lined with souvenir, antique and speciality shops in addition to churches, museums and palaces.

Gustav II Adolf’s equestrian statue unveiled in 1796. It is located in an area known as the King’s garden. The Royal Opera house in behind.

This 700 year old Cathedral is in the middle of the old city







 This ship is a youth hostel. Built in 1888 and originally a fully rigged freighter became the youth hostel in 1949. It is moored opposite the Royal palace.

 - Riddarholmskyrkan church on an island (Riddarholmen). The church was rebuilt after a serious fire in 1835 and attainted the latticework cast-iron tower spire. Sarcophagi, worn gravestones and ornate burial vaults of the Royal family dating back to 17th century surround it.


The City Hall was built in 1923 and has an impressive 106m high bell tower with the 3 crowns, The Kronor, the heraldic symbol of Sweden that dates from the 14th century.

The Riddarhuset, the house of Nobility. This assembly point for nobility was built in 1641-47 and. is still a base for meetings and events.

On our return journey we passed by other points of interest


Tivoli Grona Lund funfair on the Djugarden Island, it also has an ABBA museum next door.


The southern island, Sodermalm, has a large square (citizens square) with an amazing deigned apartment block in the background.

 Viking Line Cruise Terminal berths ferries that run to Helsinki.

Estonian Open Air Museum

A short local bus ride to an outer suburb of Tallinn took us to the Estonian Open Air Museum that has traditional buildings from all over the country. All buildings have been dismantled in their home villages and reassembled to conserve their heritage. The interiors contained traditional furniture and we saw a number of handcrafts and displays. It was spread over a large area and we saw a good cross section of Estonian country lifestyle and culture over the ages.   At the Sassi-Janni Farmstead we saw a typical, early 19 th century West Estonian farmstead grouped around a pole operated well. Grain was kept in the attic and dried by smoke from the family stove. We were also treated to an hour-long display of Estonian folk dancing which is widely practised by people of all ages. The 19 th century Kostriaseme Farmstead featured a weaving room and a small bedroom. Windmills and shops were also seen. ...

Honolulu

Honolulu: Not Waikiki or Pearl Harbour this time. With limited time in Honolulu, the girls hit the outlet shops and the boys went to the Bishop Museum .  A banyan tree outside the Hawaiian Hall of the Bishop museum Bishop Museum is home to the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts in the world and houses over 25 million historical and cultural items from all over the Pacific.
